The City of Passau and the University of Passau

The City of Passau

Passau is a charming city of about 53,000 inhabitants, uniquely located at the confluence of the rivers Danube, Inn, and Ilz on the Austrian border. Known as the “City of Three Rivers” and often called “Bavaria’s Venice” for its Mediterranean flair and peninsular old town, Passau combines history, culture, and natural beauty. The Baroque city center features landmarks such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral with one of the world’s largest church organs, and the Veste Oberhaus fortress overlooking the skyline. With its riverside promenades, lively cafés, and proximity to the Bavarian Forest, Passau offers both cultural richness and ample opportunities for leisure.

The University of Passau

Founded in 1973, the University of Passau is one of the youngest universities in Bavaria. It comprises four faculties and around 13,000 students, offering strong programs in law, economics, business, computer science, communication, and cultural studies. Most departments are located on a single campus along the banks of the River Inn, fostering collaboration and a vibrant campus life. Renowned for its interdisciplinary research and teaching, the University ranks among the top ten percent of young universities worldwide.
